Toxic Ingredients in Cosmetics and Skin Care Products

By Neil Groom

Tip! While it is not be possible to identify specific individuals who may be more susceptible to toxic mold, senior citizens, small children, infants, and people with weak immune systems and allergies are considered the most vulnerable to toxic mold-related illness. People with existing respiratory illness and asthma should be particularly careful of lung infections, which can be activated due to prolonged toxic mold exposure.

Have you ever examined the ingredients listed on the labels of your cosmetics or other skin care products? Do you know what those ingredients are?

What you may not realize is that many of the skin care products and cosmetics you are buying contain ingredients that are not only harmful to your skin, but also to your long term health. Many of these ingredients are known carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) and are used by the cosmetic industry simply because they are cheap!

Harmful Ingredients Commonly Found in Skin Care Products and Cosmetics -
The following are just some of the synthetic chemicals that have been identified by scientific studies to be harmful to our health.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) -
Often described as being "derived from coconut" to disguise their toxic nature, these chemicals are commonly used in shampoos, toothpaste, foaming facial and body cleansers and bubble bath. SLS and ALS can cause severe skin irritation, and are easily absorbed into the body, building up in the brain, heart, lungs and liver, leading to potential long term health problems. SLS and ALS may also cause cataracts, and prevent children's eyes from developing properly.

Tip! Calvin Klein's Eternity, as well as numerous other perfumes, contain the same neurotoxic solvents that are found in glues and adhesives, as well as the same volatile chemicals that are common in garages and factories. Perfumes also contain known neurotoxins, allergens, irritants and/or hormone disrupters.

Paraben Preservatives -
Parabens are widely used in cosmetics, deodorants, skin care and baby products to prolong their shelf life. They are known to be highly toxic and have caused rashes and allergic reactions. Recent scientific studies in the UK found a strong link between the use of parabens and the increasing rate of breast cancer in women. Researchers found a high concentration of parabens in 90% of breast tumors tested.

Tip! According to the Environmental Protection Agency there are 188 different toxic air pollutants.

Propylene Glycol -
Found in many beauty creams, cosmetics and cleansers, Propylene Glycol can cause skin rashes and contact dermatitis, and has been shown to cause damage to the kidneys and liver.

Isopropyl Alcohol -
Alcohol is used as a solvent in many skin care products. It causes skin irritation and strips the skin of its natural acid mantle, promoting the growth of bacteria, moulds and viruses. It may also cause premature ageing of skin.

DEA (Diethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine) and MEA (Monoethanolamine) -
These substances are harsh solvents and detergents that are used in cosmetics and face and body creams as an emollient. They can cause allergic reactions, and long term use of DEA-based products (such as Cocamide DEA) have been linked to an increase in the incidence of liver and kidney cancer.

Tip! People with existing respiratory illness and asthma should be particularly careful of lung infections, which can be activated due to prolonged toxic mold exposure.

Aluminum -
A common ingredient in antiperspirants, aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer's Disease.

Mineral Oil -
Derived from petroleum (crude oil), mineral oil is commonly found as a main ingredient of face and body creams and cosmetics. Baby oil is 100% mineral oil! It coats the skin like a plastic film, clogging pores and stopping the skin from eliminating toxins, which can lead to acne and other skin disorders. Other petroleum based ingredients include paraffin wax, paraffin oil and petrolatum.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) -
Used as a thickener in skin care products and cosmetics, PEGs interfere with the skin's natural moisture balance, causing an increase in ageing and leaving the skin vulnerable to bacteria.

Talc -
Talc is a soft mineral used in talcum powders and cosmetic powders. Scientific studies have shown that routine application of talcum powder to the genital area is linked with a three-to-fourfold increase in the development of ovarian cancer. Inhaling cosmetic powders containing talc may also be harmful to long term health.

Tip! The National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHEA) has identified 884 toxic or potentially cancer causing ingredients commonly found in commonly used personal care products.

How To Avoid These Toxins -
Examine the labels of your cosmetics and skin care products carefully, and learn to recognize ingredients that are harmful to your skin and to your health. Many web sites have lists of potentially harmful ingredients in addition to those shown above (e.g. Environmental Working Group).

Don't be fooled by the words 'natural' or 'organic' on the front of the label. Many products contain at least one or two natural or organic ingredients, but they may also contain harmful synthetic chemicals as well.

Whenever possible, choose products with 100% natural ingredients such as essential oils and herbs. Your skin will love you for it!

Is Your Body Equipped to Fight the Toxic War

By Eileen Silva

Tip! According to the Environmental Protection Agency there are 188 different toxic air pollutants.

Do you realize how much of your body is dedicated to detoxifying? You have a highly developed system that works non-stop to rid your body of unhealthy and damaging toxins. Your liver strains your body's poisons, and your kidneys filter toxins out of your blood. Your skin eliminates waste into the air, and your colon eliminates digestive waste. Your immune system fights both foreign and self-made toxins in blood and cells, and your antioxidants seek and destroy free radicals that damage and age cells. It's an amazing process, this ongoing detoxification of your body!

Your natural detoxification system is quite adequate for the healthy environment that it was designed to live in. Unfortunately, you don't live in that healthy environment. You are exposed daily to so many toxins through air, water, food, and substances that touch your skin that your natural system cannot keep up. As a result, your cells absorb not only oxygen, water, and nutrients, but harmful toxins, as well.

You should know that toxins cause a wide variety of health problems like diminished body-system capacities, premature aging, birth defects, premature infant death, and cancer. Unfortunately, sources of these toxins surround you every day.

You are exposed to air pollutants that can cause chronic respiratory problems, infections, and cancer. Your toiletries, cosmetics, deodorants, and cleansers may clog your skin pores which prevents toxins from leaving your body through the pores. Some toxins can even pass through your skin and poison your systems.

Chemical toxins are all around you in cleaning supplies, pesticides, herbicides, and food additives. You may suffer from headaches, depression, confusion, mental illness, muscle weakness, and other problems caused by these toxins.

In addition, you may be part of the estimated 25% of the population that suffer from heavy metal poisoning from industrial pollution, tin or aluminum cans, contaminated fish, cigarettes, smoke, and cosmetics. Do you have any of these signs of heavy metal poisoning: headaches, anemia, dizziness, confusion, indigestion, hair loss, muscle pains, heart disease, brain damage, or cancer?

Tip! A straightforward mold test can guard the health and future of a family.

Your body even has to fight pollutants from your food and water. Rancid food (especially fats), chemically-laden foods (which form deadly free radicals,), and contaminated foods (which form toxic bacteria and yeast in the stomach) can cause liver cancer, allergies, colitis, asthma, low immunity, and auto-immune disorders during which your body would actually attack itself. Your body can also ingest agricultural waste, bacteria, viruses, and industrial pollutants through the water supplies and the food chain.

As you can see, your body needs your help in fighting this toxic war. Educate yourself on the toxins around you, and prevent as many as you can from entering your body. Keep your colon and liver cleansed to promote their optimum operation. Drink plenty of pure water, and be careful what you eat. Keep your environment as free as possible of these damaging toxins. Help your body as it tries to give you a toxin-free life.

Self-Care Measures to Minimize Everyday Toxic Contamination

By Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

Tip! Reduce or eliminate the use of aerosol sprays or toxic chemicals for cleaning. Use natural products such as vinegar and peroxide, rubbing alcohol or baking soda instead.

Use an exhaust fan over the stove to remove cooking toxins.

Don't allow anyone to smoke in your house, office, car, or be in a house, office or car when someone smokes.

Keep damp areas such as basements, garages and bathrooms clean and dry. If you live in a high humidity area, use a dehumidifier.

Use a mask when mowing lawns, hedging or trimming plants.

Check house plant soil for mold growth. If mold is evident replace soil.

During pollen and humid weather don't hang clothes outdoors to dry, pollen and molds can collect.

Remove clothes from washer within an hour, mildew grows quickly especially in humid regions.

Change clothes after being outdoors. Air out clothes and shoes before storing.

Use high quality room air filters

Clean heating and cooling air filters and air ducts in two month intervals.

If you have inhalation allergies, keep windows and doors closed. Use AC to stay cool and filter out pollens, dirt, soot and other airborne irritants.

Use special plastic covers to seal pillows and mattresses if you are allergic to dust mites.

Clean and dust your house frequently.

Do Not use any air freshner, the chemicals are highly toxic and for some poisonous.

Avoid using heavy drapes that accumulate dust easily.

Tip! As toxic mold infestation grows and mycotoxins fill the air, symptoms may increase in severity to include asthma, sinus headache, nasal congestion, dizziness, skin rashes, hives, difficulty in swallowing, involuntary facial movements, irritable bowels, excessive fatigue, recurrent sore throat, chronic cough, bleeding lungs, pulmonary hemorrhage, increased risk of tuberculosis, and osteopenia.

Remove carpets or rugs (hard wood floors don't collect dust as easily as carpet).

Keep family pets in certain rooms, avoid the bedroom. Bathe the animal frequently.

Do not use cat litter that clumps, the chemical to create the clumping is highly toxic and for some poisonous.

The Toxic Truth About Artificial Sweeteners

By Corie Goodson

Tip! Mild symptoms of toxic mold appear quite similar to the common cold, including red eyes, sore throat, and headache.

The problem with sugar is that it doesn't contain any nutrients so when you consume too much you crowd out room for healthier foods. In fact, it is estimated that on average, Americans consume over 200 pounds of refined sugar annually. On the other side of the coin you have artificial sweeteners which are getting more negative press as adverse health effects begin to emerge.

What's the big deal? Well, decades ago it was found that some artificial sweeteners may cause cancer and were taken out of products and off the shelves. Next, enter the next latest and greatest. The FDA said it was the recommended alternative and put it in all sugar free products. It wasn't very long before women in particular started having negative side effects as a result of ingesting it in their usual products. Later it was discovered that due to a chemical reaction in the body, it can act as a neurotoxin (one that affects the brain and nervous system). It is now speculated to mimic symptoms of Alzheimers, MS, Parkinsons and a host of other neurological diseases. While it hasn't been taken off the market, there is yet another contender.

Tip! As toxic mold infestation grows and mycotoxins fill the air, symptoms may increase in severity to include asthma, sinus headache, nasal congestion, dizziness, skin rashes, hives, difficulty in swallowing, involuntary facial movements, irritable bowels, excessive fatigue, recurrent sore throat, chronic cough, bleeding lungs, pulmonary hemorrhage, increased risk of tuberculosis, and osteopenia.

It's claim to fame is that it is a healthy alternative to other artificial sweeteners because it is made from sugar. Yes, it is manufactured from sugar molecules but in order for it to be converted, labs have to use a process whereby they chlorinate it. Hello, I said chlorinate! We know chlorine is a known carcinogen and shouldn't be consumed in any amount. Since it has only been on the market for a short time, there is no way of knowing whether it will cause harmful side effects. If history is any indication, I wouldn't be so quick to be the guinea pig for such a study. I'll admit, it is confusing even for those of us in the health profession. There is so much conflicting information being bombarded on us all the time that it is just too difficult to keep up on all the latest information.

Tip! Many toxic air pollutants are known to cause cancer, respiratory or allergy problems, reproductive disorders, birth defects and other serious health issues.

What about sugar alcohol? Sugar alcohol usually ends in "tol" on labels. These can be an acceptable alternative in very small amounts as they do not affect blood sugar as much as the real thing, but too much can cause gastric distress, bloating, cramps and diarrhea. You will find sugar alcohol in many of the low carb candies and chocolates on the market as well as products made for diabetics. This is one time when portion size really needs to be adhered to as not paying attention could cause some not so pleasant side effects. Your best bet is to minimize refined sugar rather than substitute it with anything artificial.

Tip! People with existing respiratory illness and asthma should be particularly careful of lung infections, which can be activated due to prolonged toxic mold exposure.

Health tip: Try using fruit juice or Stevia to sweeten things instead. In fact, applesauce is a great substitute for sugar and oil in baked goods.

It is becoming more and more difficult to maintain a "healthy" diet in a toxic world.

Nutrition in a Toxic World is Key to Wellness and Weight Loss

By Nancy Guberti

Tip! According to the Environmental Protection Agency there are 188 different toxic air pollutants.

How often do you really wonder and pay attention to the effect of good, sensible nutrition and the impact that it has on your health? How often do you choose healthy choices in your daily lifestyle, from eating organic to using organic lawn care and household products? Things to make you go hmmmmm. Scratch your head and think about it for awhile. You deserve it; you are worth it!

Everywhere you turn, you are literally surrounded by toxins. Environmentally, toxins are among us from the polluted air, pesticide-grown lawns and trees, contaminated water, toxic household cleaning products, toxic personal hygiene products, not to mention the pesticide and toxic manner of growing the very food that you consume. Have you read a food label lately and been able to pronounce every word and understand what the actual ingredient is? You'll be shocked to check out the sodium content, fat content and sugar content on the majority of conventional food products. The marketing of conventional food products do not educate the consumer on the content and good nutrition; they just tantalize you to purchase the products. Consumer Beware! Eat Smart!

Let's take a Basic Nutrition Class together:
Nutrition impacts your health and, therefore, your life. Healthy food choices provide your body with vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and antioxidants without any added toxins. Your muscles, bones, skin, hair, teeth and vital organs are affected by your choices. Degenerative disorders, weakened immune systems, and migraines are just a partial list of healthy issues that have been linked to toxin buildup and nutrient deficient bodies. You are what you eat and what your body absorbs. It's an intricate process that needs your support by making healthier choices.

Organic produce is best for you because it is full of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants since it was grown without harmful pesticides and it was grown in nutrient-rich soil without any genetically modified seeds.

Natural, Free-Range, Organic or Grass-fed meats and poultry are the right choice when choosing these protein food group items since they were grown without the use of hormones, antibiotics and inhumane conditions. The animals are treated the way nature intended them to be raised. Mad Cow's disease is not a factor when you eat meats raised in this manner. If you are a fish eater, check the mercury content of the particular fish before consuming this food group.

Tip! Mild symptoms of toxic mold appear quite similar to the common cold, including red eyes, sore throat, and headache.

Bottled Water is the way to go to avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners as part of your liquid intake. Artificial sweeteners in soft drinks, color additives and unnecessary corn syrup are harmful to your health. Certain artificial sweeteners are excitotoxins affecting your brain and central nervous system and may lead to degenerative disorders. Forego the sugar injected, color additive rich Sports Drinks - some even have caffeine as an ingredient. Choose an electrolyte mix without any added ingredients, just the electrolytes.

Processed Foods are mostly devoid of nutrients; therefore, they do not add nutrients to your diet. Most of them are filled with sodium, fat and sugar not to mention MSG, nitrates and color additives. If you have to be a chemist to read the label, then skip it and choose a more wholesome food choice. Nitrates are added to most conventional processed meats and can convert into a carcinogenic element. Again, choose a natural, organic, nitrate-free meat.

Plan ahead and cook meals on weekends and make enough to provide some meals for the week. A little planning goes a long way for coming up with time saving meals and healthy, nutritious meals for you and your family. Homemade chicken soup with natural ingredients provides a chicken meal one day, enough broth to use when making risotto or a soup based meal for another day. Organic lentil pasta meals can be cooked and used again as a quick meal. Crock pots and steamers can be utilized for time-saving meals as well. Juicing is an amazing kitchen gadget to give your body live food, raw enzymes and a wealth of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Tip! As toxic mold infestation grows and mycotoxins fill the air, symptoms may increase in severity to include asthma, sinus headache, nasal congestion, dizziness, skin rashes, hives, difficulty in swallowing, involuntary facial movements, irritable bowels, excessive fatigue, recurrent sore throat, chronic cough, bleeding lungs, pulmonary hemorrhage, increased risk of tuberculosis, and osteopenia.

Daily multi-vitamins, minerals, enzymes, probiotics and antioxidants are an important part of your daily healthy regimen. Check Consumerlab.com test results when choosing the purest brand of supplements.

I respectfully offer this information in an effort to educate each of you about the possible effects of some of the choices we are making without being fully informed as to the long-term, far-reaching effects on our children, our families as a whole and our environment.

As responsible consumers we owe it to ourselves and our families to step out of the box.We need to do our own research - see if our families respond positively to removing as many of the harmful chemicals fom our homes as possible. I'm not naive and I'm not obsessive about this - we all know we will not be able to remove ALL of the harmful chemicals, but trust me every little bit (and I mean EVERY little bit) helps.

The media is a powerful force to contend with. Ask yourself, what is their objective. Do "they" really have the best interest of your family at heart, or is their concern the "bottom line". Watch the commercials with a critical eye. What are they spraying on those baby toys? (We all know where babies put their toys?) Why are there rubber gloves on this lady as she wipes up the kitchen counter? (That same counter Mary will make her sandwich on when she gets home from school).

Step out of the box, even if it's only to test the results for yourself. Don't just take my word for it. Prove me wrong if you must. See for yourself. Find yourself a source of products that do not contain harmful chemicals, commit to using them for no less than six to eight months - it's going to take awhile to get the effects of those chemicals out of your system (the harsh reality is that you will never get the effects of some of the toxins out of your body).

Sit yourself down six months from now and ask yourself - Do you feel different? Is Johnny's asthma improved? Are you concentrating better? Do you have less gray hair? Is your skin brighter, healthier looking? Do you sleep better? Are the pets more active? Are you having to deal less with the behavioral problems? You get the picture.

I invite you to visit my website as a springboard for your research and I encourage you to share this information with all those you care about. Please take a few minutes and watch the video and fell free to pass it on. It is only through education and public awareness we will be able to minimize the effects these products are having on our children.

My grandma used to say you have to eat a peck of dirt before you die. I don't think she meant it literally, (in fact I know she didn't mean it literally, I really caught whatfor when she caught me eating mudpies, afterall how was I supposed to know you weren't to eat the whole peck in one sitting). I believe what her intent was that for our immune systems need those little exposures we get every once in awhile from some of the bacteria around.

I have been doing all sorts of research for my new website about toxins found in our homes. We have become a society of germphobes and as a result have often, with the best of good intentions, put our families at risk.

In my travels through cyberspace, I came across this little piece and I'd like to share with you. I admit it is a bit dated (my Lord, I'm getting old, 2000 is "dated"), but if anything, the content is more valid today than ever before. All you have to do is sit down some Tuesday afternoon, put on one of the network channels and see how many commercials tout the glories of this or that new and improved cleaning product or odor fighting superhero. (Tell me are the odor fighting superheros to cover the smell of the "new and improved" - does that mean last weeks "new and improved" products are now the "old and unimproved"). Enjoy!

Crack Down on Household Chemicals
by author Lorie Dwornick

You are what you eat, digest and absorb through inhalation and the pores of the skin.

The skin is the largest organ of the body. When the liver is overworked, the skin takes over the elimination of toxins. Unfortunately, many toxins are not that easy to get rid of and all organs suffer.

For example, chlorine is the number one cause of breast cancer. It can be lethal. Scientists won’t handle it without protective gloves, face masks and ventilation, yet it is in most store- brand cleaners, including dishwasher detergents. The harmful effects are intensified when the fumes are heated. It’s in our drinking water, swimming pools and our Jacuzzis.

According to the National Research Council, "no toxic information is available for more than 80 per cent of the chemicals in everyday-use products. Less than 20 per cent have been tested for acute effects and less than 10 per cent have been tested for chronic, reproductive or mutagenic effects." More than four and a half billion chemicals are known and 50,000 are commercially distributed.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) depends on industry-sponsored tests for approval. In 1981, one company was found guilty of falsifying over 90 per cent of more than 2000 studies. Those products are still readily available.

High Cost of Toxins

It requires a team of scientists, 300 mice, more than $300,000 US and two to three years to determine whether one single suspect chemical causes cancer. Governments are at the mercy of economic agendas. Whenever there is a question of industry interests versus health or government regulation, industry always wins. Up to 99 percent of toxins are not required to be listed on labels. This is mainly because the products don’t make any claims about safety.

You may be surprised at how dangerous some products are, especially ones that you use in your home on a regular basis. Oven cleaners are one of the worst. They contain lye and ammonia which eat the skin; the fumes linger and affect the respiratory system. The residue intensifies the next time you heat your oven.

Disinfectants are usually phenol- or cresol-based. They deactivate sensory nerve endings. They attack the liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas and the central nervous system (CNS). It takes over a year to eliminate the unhealthful effects of spraying two and a half ounces, even with heavy cross ventilation.

Air fresheners interfere with your ability to smell by releasing nerve-deadening agents or coating nasal passages with an oil film. Usually this is methoxychlor, a pesticide that accumulates in fat cells and over-stimulates the CNS. Some other common ingredients include P-dichlorobenzene, naphthalene and formaldehyde. Fresh, organic citrus juices, spices and essential oils do a better job, risk free.

Formaldehyde is in almost all cleaning products, including laundry detergents, toothpaste and shampoo. Laundry detergents contain phosphorus, enzymes, ammonia, naphthalene, phenol, sodium nitilotriacetate and countless others. These chemicals can cause rashes, itches, allergies, sinus problems and more. The residue left on your clothes and bed sheets is absorbed through your skin, as is everything else you touch.

Toxic Cleanliness

One million poisonings in Canada each year are due to household cleaner ingestion. Some are fatal. The number one cause of household poisoning is dish detergent. Each time you wash your dishes, some residue is left on them. The residue accumulates every time your dishes are washed. Your food picks up part of the residue, especially if your meal is hot.

Dishwashing liquids are labelled "harmful if swallowed." Most contain naphtha, a CNS depressant, dieth- anolsamine, a liver poison and/or chlorophenylphenol, a toxic metabolic stimulant.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission on chemicals commonly found in homes identified 150 linked to cancer, allergies, birth defects and psychological abnormalities. Ten per cent cause high blood pressure and migraines and 20 percent are responsible for mental disturbances.

Indoor air in the home has been found to have five times higher toxic chemical concentrations than outdoor air. This is also true in rural areas. A five-year study conducted by the EPA showed many indoor air samples to be 70 times more toxic. Could this be why almost everyone is sick, especially children and those working in public buildings?

"Clean" Carcinogens

A scientific paper at the "Indoor Air Conference" in Toronto in 1990 stated "because of household cleaners, housewives have a 55 percent higher risk of contracting cancer."

With all these dangers well documented and well known, industry still spends millions of dollars each year to convince us that we need these products. And it is much more dangerous and expensive to dispose of these toxins in hazardous waste dumps, which are few and far between.

The government acknowledges that these cleaning products are hazardous, but regulation only requires labels to indicate combustible, corrosive, poison or caution.

Do your own research. Use the products that are the safest for your families. Don’t leave your fate in the hands of multibillion dollar chemical industries whose only concern is profit. Remember, your shopping habits create a demand for the products you buy.

I hope you really took the time to absorb the message here, we honestly can't trust the chemical industry to have the best interest of our families at heart. The chemical industry is big business and big business has no room for heart.

I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read this information and I know I have taken up a fair bit of time from a very busy day, however, if you have a few more minutes, be sure to pop over to my new website to find out how you can detox you home. It's got some really good information on it if I do say so myself.

Is it not absurd to suggest we would knowingly expose our family to harmful chemicals. After all, as good parents, we must protect against the multitude of germs and bacterial we are warned of every day in the media.

We wage battle against fungii, salmonella, e-coli, staph aureus with an ever increasing army of products that must be safe - we purchase them from our local markets, they wouldn't have them on the shelves if they weren't safe -- would they?

I would like to share a bit of advice. Read the labels on your household and personal care products.

We read labels on our food products, looking for amount of sugar and fat, reduced calories, cholesterol count all in the name of keeping our family healthy. Why then, would we not do the same for the other products we bring into our home. A general rule of thumb, if you can't pronounce it, there's a good chance you don't want to be using it.

CBC MARKETPLACE: HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

A toxic brew

Shawn Ellis tests indoor pollution levels.

We seem to be a society obsessed with cleanliness. We want our whites whiter and our bathrooms and kitchens hospital-grade disinfected. Industry has answered: today's cleaning products promise faster, easier, better results, and no scrubbing. But is our clean-freak streak is harming our kids?

Shawn Ellis is a toxicologist who's begun marketing his services to anxious homeowners. He tests the air in people's homes to see how many chemicals or other particulate matter may be floating there.

Among his clients is Amanda Saul. She has severe respiratory problems. Five weeks ago, she was rushed to hospital because she couldn't breath.

"I called Shawn because I was having a lot of problems breathing and I wasn’t sure if it had to do with the house, moulds and stuff, or whether it had to do with the air quality, maybe even our cleaning products."

Her oldest son, Kieran, is three. Like so many kids these days, he suffers from allergies, eczema and asthma.

"Some of my clients, using cleaners, especially if it’s a combination of cleaners, can actually feel dizzy or have headaches."

What he's talking about are everyday cleaning products — like the ones Amanda and her husband use every day. Many of them contain chemicals.

"I think the majority of the awareness of cleaning products in people’s homes are that a cleaning product is natural and safe. I don’t think people consider cleaning products chemicals," Ellis said.

Amanda Saul and her family like their cleaners as much as anyone else.

"It is very seductive to try and get the best cleaning product out there that will actually do the job."

And the advertising for those products addresses that feeling. The come-on to parents is full of babies and young children looking adorable — and vulnerable. It's a parent's job to keep them free from germs. Last year, Canadians spent more than $275 million on household cleaning products.

Not required to disclose ingredients

Kathy Cooper — a senior researcher with the Canadian Environmental Law Association — says there's a lot we don't know about the chemicals in our cleaners. Companies are not required to tell us.

"For cleaning products in particular, the only thing the label will tell you is whether it is seriously toxic…if you swallow it or get it in your eye, or will the container blow up…but you don’t have any information about…long term toxicity," Cooper told Marketplace.

If you look at the label of your favourite floor cleaner or furniture polish, you won't see much in the way of ingredients. That's because companies are protected by trade secrets. If you do see an ingredient, it's because it could blow up or poison you. Many other chemicals are not even listed.

"If you had the kind of labelling laws that they have in Europe, where it would tell you that 'this product contains something that may cause cancer' and another similar product that does the same job doesn’t, you might not buy the product that contains the carcinogen," said Larry Stoffman an international expert on chemical hazards information.
