Baby Wipes Or Chemical Wipes?

By Jennifer A. Casey

Chemical/Toxic Injury? Need a Lawyer? Lawyers committed to helping the victims of injury by Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, and Toxic Substances-First Visit Free.

If you calculate the number of diaper changes you perform in a day, by the number of baby wipes you use at each change, the result is an estimated 4400 wipes per year. Not only can wipes be wasteful to the environment if they are not biodegradeable, but they can also contain such chemicals as fragrance, chlorine, synthetic preservatives, and dioxin.

Clairity Clean Air Systems Indoor Air Quality Monitoring and Equipment. Sales, Service and Installation.

Wipes are used, not only for diaper changing, but also to wipe hands and faces, to clean off pacifiers that have fallen onto the street, and to wipe down dirty shopping cart handles. They are terribly convenient, and are an essential in every well-packed diaper bag. The concern is not if you have packed enough for your outing, but what is lurking inside that solution that keeps them nice and moist.

That delicious, fresh baby smell, also known as fragrance or perfume, is found in some brands of baby wipes and can be a potential concern to some. Synthetic fragrances have shown such effects, on baby, as skin irritation, allergic reactions, and headaches. If baby is suffering from eczema, synthetic ingredients can also irritate the issue.

Top-Rated Austin Air - Unbeatable Prices We have unbeatable prices on the Austin Air Healthmate HEPA/odor air filter for allergies, asthma and chemical sensitivities. The cleaner removes dust, mold, dander, smoke, pollen and mites.

Dioxins, often found in meat and dairy products, are also the by-product of the chlorine bleaching process. The effects of dioxin have been proven to be carcinogenic.

To avoid having to flush or dispose of wipes, and to eliminate the use of chemicals on your baby's precious skin, make your own washable wipes! They still fit perfectly into your mini wipes case in your diaper bag, and they can be soaked and washed after use, with your cotton diapers, in vinegar and water. Just as convenient as disposable wipes, but friendlier to the environment and baby's skin!

Home Improvement Projects - Chemical Knowledge

By Bill Prudehome

While the vast majority of individuals, think about home construction projects in the contest of bricks and lumber. Most projects involve the use of many products that contain chemicals.

There are two very important considerations when it comes to chemicals in products used for construction. The first concern is the general safety issues that are associated with the use and storage of the products and the second is the concern about chemicals that could have longer negative affects on individuals who suffer from allergies and asthma or have other respiratory problems.

Although common sense may tell us to never mix products that have chemical bases, it happens every day. The most common occurrence of product mixing is with cleaning products. Many cleaning products are chlorine based while just as many are ammonia based. Both are excellent cleaning agents and while it is of the utmost importance that care be taken when using products with either of these base chemicals - safety goggles and rubber gloves as they are toxic unto themselves. Mixing them produces chlorine gas, which is deadly. Mixing chemicals does not always occur by pouring one liquid into another, it can occur by accident or without thought - spilling chemicals on a floor or using one chemical after another are common events. Another common error is to use the same sponge or rag with two different cleaning products. Pouring chemicals down a drain, one after the other will allow the chemicals to mix in the drain trap.

It is almost impossible to undertake a home renovation or home improvement project without the use of a chemically based product. All glues, adhesives, mortar, cement, thin set, caulking, paints, polyurethanes, lacquer, and strippers are based on some chemical composition.

All chemically based products should be treated with a great deal of respect and caution.

Detox and Women's Health Take control of your health with our natural at-home detox program.

Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions - believe it or not, the manufacturer does know the safest and best way to use and store their product. It is also wise to read and make a note of the health notification on the product. In many cases, once the product is being used the instructions and health information that is on the label is obliterated to a point where it can no longer be read.

Families that have allergies or respiratory problems should be careful about what chemicals may have been used in the manufacture of finished products. Items such as carpets and rugs use adhesives to bond the backing to the fibers. Laminate flooring is the bonding of paper and wood chips under compression using adhesive. The same manufacturing techniques are used to create sheets of plywood, chip, and particleboard, including engineered hardwood. Foam insulation and underlayments, nylon and rayon are all products derived from petroleum. All of the aforementioned products may release small quantities of chemicals into the air throughout their life.

Organic or Chemical - or both? What Kind of Garden Should You Grow!

By Jim Kennard

Chemical Sensitivity Get a great price on chemical sensitivity and other products. Save time and money every time you shop, find great deals online.

Today we will discuss a fundamental question in gardening. Previously I was posed this question: "I hear that chemicals are poisoning our waterways, and that organic growing is much healthier than using chemicals. What's the truth, and how do I grow a healthy, productive, and sustainable garden without hurting the environment?"

This important question deserves an accurate answer. Therefore let's learn about plant nutrition. First, plants receive nutrition only as water-soluble mineral compounds through their roots. When we put plants, compost or manure into the soil, the organic material must first decompose, and the nutrient compounds must revert to water-soluble minerals before the next generation of plants can use them. This takes time, and sometimes as much as half of the nutrients are lost in the decomposition process. Nitrogen is particularly susceptible to loss because it is volatile and returns to the air very easily.

Buy Chemical Sensitivity Products Here Find quality allergy and asthma relief products at lower prices. At Allergy Solutions, we don't offer products for your home until we have tested them in our own. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Second, there is no real difference between organic, and mineral or chemical nutrients. Everything in this world is a chemical! To the chemist the elements in the soil are called chemicals, to a geologist they are called minerals, and to an organic enthusiast they are called organics, but they are the same substances. To quote J. I. Rodale, from Organic Gardening magazine, "we organic gardeners have let our enthusiasm run away with us. We have said that the nitrogen which is in organic matter is different (and thus somehow better) from nitrogen in a commercial fertilizer. But this is not so." And "actually there is no difference between the nitrogen in a chemical fertilizer and the nitrogen in a leaf."

Third, there is no difference between soil and rocks except for the size of the particles, and 12 of the 13 mineral nutrients plants require are essentially ground-up rocks! They are natural, and there's really nothing "synthetic" about them.

So you see, there is no difference between "organic nitrogen" and mineral or chemical nitrogen, except two primary things. 1) the nitrogen that is part of an organic substance must decompose and revert to the water-soluble mineral state before being available to plants, and 2) mineral-source nitrogen is much higher in nutritional content, so much less is required to feed your plants.

Chemical Sensitivity Find a huge variety of nonfiction books at eBay, from art and photography to true crime, it's all on eBay.

As further evidence that mineral nutrients are not bad per se, I've researched which fertilizers meet the requirements for qualification as a Certified Organic garden, and 12 of the 13 nutrients we use in a Mittleider garden are approved. And the 13th - nitrogen - is the one that's most often used by organic gardeners, both in the garden and to aid in composting! Go figure.

This being the case, what should you do to assure you have the best garden and the healthiest plants possible? Give your plants accurate dosages of the best combination of nutrition you possibly can. The Mittleider natural mineral nutrient formulas are available at www.foodforeveryone.org/learn. You can mix your own "from scratch", or get the micro-nutrients from the Foundation website in the Store section. And never over-use any kind of fertilizer. Both manure and mineral compounds will harm our water supply if allowed to leach into the water table.

Coast Southwest: Silicones and More Coast Southwest, a division of Coast Chemical, Inc., is a regional distributor of silicones, personal care specialties, and other industrial chemicals.

Meanwhile, remember that 99% of us depend on 1% to feed us, and commercial growers feed their crops! They use formulas like ours and call them "The preferred horticultural mix." Just check out Scott's Peter's Professional Pete Lite as an example.

This is not to say that organic materials don't have a place in the garden. You can improve soil texture and tilth by adding materials that have desirable characteristics, and even add some nutrient value. However, improving the soil in that way is not necessary to having a good garden, and people often introduce weeds, rodents, bugs, and diseases into their gardens, or provide a haven for them with their organic mulching practices. It is for this reason that we do not emphasize or encourage composting and manure.

Bonus Ringtones - Sensitivity Select your mobile carrier. Enter your phone number and get your ringtones.

Mittleider gardens qualify as "organic" because we don't use pesticides or herbicides. However, I suggest they are even better than organic, because the plants receive just what they need, they grow fast, and we almost never have insect or disease problems because there are no weeds to provide a home, and the plants aren't in the ground long enough for the pests to get established.

Chemical Cleaning Facts - All Those Chemicals Don't Do That Much Harm, Do They?

By Angie Black

Chemical Sensitivity Products Now you don't have to hunt the Web for natural, non-toxic products.

Do you want to know the cleaning facts that are not widely publicised? If you've ever read the ingredients on the labels of your household cleaners, you'd know that they contain a number of different chemicals. You're also probably aware that these chemicals have a distinct smell or odour. This article is intended to tell you what you probably don't know. All the cleaning facts in this article have a direct affect on you and it should be your right to know them.

Detox and Women's Health Take control of your health with our natural at-home detox program.

Our cleaning facts research states that there are over 75,000 chemicals licensed for commercial use in today's world, with about 2000 new synthetic chemicals licensed each year. A large number of these chemicals are suspected carcinogens or are thought to cause a number of health problems. It may surprise you to know that only 600 of these chemicals have been adequately tested. Commercial cleaning product companies are under no legal obligation to research how their products might harm human health. What's more, only 1% of toxins are required to be listed on the product label. This is because companies classify their ingredients as 'trade secrets'. -Lorie Dwornick, researcher, educator and activist, 2002

Want more cleaning facts? According to the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, chemical levels in the home are up to 70 times higher than outside. It has been proven that air quality inside the average American household is 2 to 5 times more contaminated than the outside air. This is due largely to the chemicals found in commercial products such as cosmetics and cleaning products. In 1985, research by the EPA concluded that chemicals in household cleaners are about 3 times more likely to cause cancer than any other air pollutant. Did you know that in the early 1900's, only 1 in every 8,000 Americans developed cancer. This ratio has dropped to 1 in every 3 today!

Our cleaning facts research has also alerted us to the dangers concerning our children. Over a million Americans are treated for exposure to household cleaning products. The majority of these are children under the age of 12. When you take into account the weight difference between that of a child and that of an adult, the amount of air, food and water consumed by a child is far greater than that of an adult. This means that they are exposed more to pollutants than adults. A child's immune system is also less developed and their developing cells are more easily damaged. Pollutants in the air tend to be more concentrated towards ground level. Children breathe air which contains more pollutants simply because of their height. They also tend to spend more time playing on the floor and in contact with cleaning product residues. Those chemicals which are tested are only tested for adults. Children are not considered. Does this sound worrying? What affect is our chemical lifestyle having on our children's health?

Eastar Chemical: Toll/Custom Chemical Kilo, pilot, multi-ton production facilities in China. Over 20 years of quality service to chemical industry. US sales and chemists, cGMP/ISO/EH&S/Kosher.

The chemical industry claims that very low levels of exposure to these chemicals are safe, yet there have been no exposure studies completed for the large majority of these chemicals. There is also limited information as to how these chemicals interact with each other. According to the EPA, combined chemicals are far more dangerous. Did you know that mixing Ammonia with bleach results in a toxic gas extremely lethal to humans? If you also check the ingredients of many household cleaners you will find that they often contain both ammonia and bleach.

If you remember any of these cleaning facts, remember this. Petrochemical cleaning products are absorbed easily through our skin. The chemicals travel through our blood stream and are stored in our fatty tissues. Over time, the build up of these toxic chemicals causes many health problems, including cancer and Alzheimer's disease. All this can be avoided with the use of 'green' products which contain no toxic chemicals and are much safer for the environment. You should also be aware that all the chemicals that you wash down your drains will inevitably end up in our rivers. The water in our rivers is put through a water treatment plant where it is mixed with even more toxic chemicals. It is then returned to us in our taps. Everything that we do to the environment we also do to ourselves!

5 interesting cleaning facts

Cleaning Fact 1: Cold water will inhibit the spread of bacteria and germs. Hot water only encourages the growth of nasty organisms.

Cleaning Fact 2: Antibacterial soaps are really not necessary in the home and may do more harm than good.

Cleaning Fact 3: Commercial dish washing detergents often leave chemical residues on your dishes that accumulate each time you wash them. Those chemicals are absorbed into your food.

Cleaning Fact 4: If a chemical kills half of a group of test animals it is labeled toxic. If the lab animals survives after being exposed to an amount greater than that listed it is labeled non-toxic. These tests are not specific to humans and do not consider long term exposure. (Lab animals often include mice which have a stronger immune system than humans.)

Cleanse for heavy metals, chemical toxin Until your body: cells, organs, and tissues, are free of their immense storage of heavy metals and chemical toxins, you will not regain and maintain your physical health.

Cleaning Fact 5: Women who work at home are at a 54% greater risk of developing cancer than women who work away from home. A 15 year study concluded that this is a direct result of the chemicals in household products.

Chemical-Free Sleep

By Jennifer Jordan

Clairity Clean Air Systems Indoor Air Quality Monitoring and Equipment. Sales, Service and Installation.

For those of us who get the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night, we will spend a whole third of our lives on top of our mattress. Because this is such a significant amount of time, the last thing we want to be is sleeping with chemicals; most of us would rather sleep with the fishes. But, the truth is many of us may be sleeping on mattresses containing chemicals and not even realize it.

Chemicals, by textbook definition, are explained as being something made of or generated from substances produced by reactions involving atomic or molecular changes. In the dictionary of modern day life, chemicals have become synonymous with disease, particularly cancer, and therefore many of us do not want to be sleeping with them, not even if they buy us dinner first.

Chemical Sensitivity Get a great price on chemical sensitivity and other products. Save time and money every time you shop, find great deals online.

Mattresses don't strike most people as something stuffed with chemicals; a black cloud doesn't surround them like it does smoke stacks or a semi-truck. They seem, to the average sleeper, perfectly harmless. But, because manufacturers of consumer products have found that they can save money by cutting production costs and replacing natural materials with materials that are petroleum based or made of synthetic chemicals, mattresses are becoming cheaper, but possibly at a more expensive cost.

High-Quality Agricultural Chemicals ReichmanSales.com - agricultural chemicals at wholesale prices.

Health wise, chemicals are not viewed as a good thing. Whether they are ingested, or inhaled, they can be dangerous; the human body would benefit from a "Do Not Enter" sign placed around its perimeter. For these reasons, many people are turning to more natural ways to sleep.

A Natural Latex Mattress, as the name insinuates, provides not only a natural way of sleeping, but undeniable comfort. Conforming to the body, disallowing for the build up of pressure points, and providing natural back support, the Natural Latex Mattress provides both short term and long term benefits.

Unique to other mattresses, the benefits of the Natural Latex Mattress are all given on an organic, synthetic-free basis. This makes the mattress highly recommended for all those who want to remove all unnatural materials from their bed.

With solid comfort, and natural ingredients, the Natural Latex Mattress allows both the body and the mind to rest more comfortably.

Titanium Dioxide: Toxic or Safe?

By Lori Stryker

Tip! Mild symptoms of toxic mold appear quite similar to the common cold, including red eyes, sore throat, and headache.

Titanium dioxide is the subject of new controversy, yet it is a substance as old as the earth itself. It is one of the top fifty chemicals produced worldwide. It is a white, opaque and naturally- occurring mineral found in two main forms: rutile and anatase. Both forms contain pure titanium dioxide that is bound to impurities. Titanium dioxide is chemically processed to remove these impurities, leaving the pure, white pigment available for use. Titanium dioxide has a variety of uses, as it is odorless and absorbent. This mineral can be found in many products, ranging from paint to food to cosmetics. In cosmetics, it serves several purposes. It is a white pigment, an opacifier and a sunscreen. Concern has arisen from studies that have pointed to titanium dioxide as a carcinogen and photocatalyst, thus creating fear in consumers. But are these claims true? What does the research on these allegations bear out? Would we as consumers benefit from avoiding this mineral to preserve our long-term health?

Tip! People with existing respiratory illness and asthma should be particularly careful of lung infections, which can be activated due to prolonged toxic mold exposure.

A carcinogen is a substance that causes a cellular malfunction, causing the cell to become cancerous and thus potentially lethal to the surrounding tissue and ultimately the body as these rapidly growing mutated cells take over. With the surge in cancer rates among all segments of the population, many people are attempting to reduce or eliminate their exposure to carcinogens. Titanium dioxide is regarded as an inert, non-toxic substance by many regulatory bodies such as the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) and others charged with the responsibility of safeguarding the health of occupational workers and public health. The MSDS states that titanium dioxide can cause some lung fibrosis at fifty times the nuisance dust, defined by the US Department of Labor as 15 mg/m cubed (OSHA) or 10 mg/m cubed (ACGIH Threshold Limit Value). The ACGIH states that titanium dioxide is "not classifiable as a human carcinogen". Symptoms of chronic overexposure to titanium dioxide in an industrial setting, according to the MSDS, include a "slight increase in lung tumour incidence in lab rats". It also states "when titanium dioxide was fed to rats/mice in a carcinogen bioassay, it was not carcinogenic". The NIOSH declares that at 5000 mg/m cubed there was slight lung fibrosis, concluding that this substance was carcinogenic in rats.

Tip! A straightforward mold test can guard the health and future of a family.

The NIOSH declaration of carcinogenicity in rats is based on a study by Lee, Trochimowicz & Reinhardt, "Pulmonary Response of Rats Exposed to Titanium Dioxide by Inhalation for Two Years" (1985). The authors of this study found that rats chronically exposed to excessive dust loading of 250 mg/m cubed and impaired clearance mechanisms within the rat, for six hours per day, five days per week for two years, developed slight lung tumours. They also noted that the biological relevance of this data to lung tumours in humans is negligible. It is important to note that rats are known to be an extremely sensitive species for developing tumours in the lungs when overloaded with poorly soluble, low toxicity dust particles. Rat lungs process particles very differently compared to larger mammals such as dogs, primates or humans (Warheit, 2004). This sensitivity in the lungs has not been observed in other rodent species such as mice or hamsters (Warheit, 2004), therefore using the rat model to determine carcinogenicity of titanium dioxide in humans can be misleading, as extrapolation of species-specific data to humans is erroneous.

Tip! The National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHEA) has identified 884 toxic or potentially cancer causing ingredients commonly found in commonly used personal care products.

Many organizations and businesses have perpetuated this assessment of the carcinogenicity of titanium dioxide (ewg.org). However, several studies and study reviews have been used to compile the safety disclaimers for the regulations on the permitted use of titanium dioxide. One such study review took place in Rome, 1969 between the World Health Organization and the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Cross species analyses were performed and reviewed for possible toxicity of titanium dioxide. The conference concluded that among the following species: rats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats and human males, ingestion of titanium dioxide at varying diet percentages and over long periods of time did not cause absorption of this mineral. Titanium dioxide particulates were not detected in the blood, liver, kidney or urine and no adverse effects were noted from its ingestion. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (2002) allows for its ingestion, external application including the eye area, and considers it a safe substance for public health. Other epidemiological studies showed that workers exposed to titanium dioxide exhibited no statistically significant relationship between such exposure with lung cancer and respiratory disease, although some cases of pulmonary fibrosis did occur. These studies were conducted in industrial settings where the increased exposure puts these individuals more at risk than the average person.

Tip! Many toxic air pollutants are known to cause cancer, respiratory or allergy problems, reproductive disorders, birth defects and other serious health issues.

Titanium dioxide is listed as a safe pigment, with no known adverse effects. It is not listed as a carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen, comedogen, toxin or as a trigger for contact dermatitis in any other safety regulatory publications beside the NIOSH (Antczak, 2001; Physical & Theoretical Chemical Laboratory, Oxford University respectively). It is reasonable to conclude then, that titanium dioxide is not a cancer-causing substance and is generally safe for use in foods, drugs, paints and cosmetics. This does not end the debate, however, as controversy over the safety of one unique form of titanium dioxide still exists.

One form of mineral or mineral extract, including titanium dioxide, that we should be concerned about is ultrafine or nano particles. As technology has advanced, so has its ability to take normal sized particles of minerals and reduce them to sizes never before imagined. While many are praising this new technology, others are warning of its inherent dangers to our bodies. A study by Churg et. al. at the University of British Columbia in their paper "Induction of Fibrogenic Mediators by Fine and Ultrafine Titanium Dioxide in Rat Tracheal Explants" (1999) found that ultrafine particles of the anatase form of titanium dioxide, which are less than 0.1 microns, are pathogenic or disease causing (see Table 1).

Tip! The best means of avoiding the serious repercussions of toxic mold is to have your home or office tested as soon as the above-mentioned symptoms appear. A straightforward mold test can guard the health and future of a family.

Table 1: Measurements of Mineral Pigment Particles

Particle Size | Measurement
Coarse | Less than 10 microns
Fine | Less than 2.5 microns
Ultrafine (nanoparticles) | Less than 0.1 microns or 100 nanometres
-etcgroup.org

Table 2: Particle Size and Entry into the Human Body

Nanoparticle Size | Entry Point
70 nanometres | Alveolar surface of lung
50 nanometres | Cells
30 nanometres | Central Nervous System
Less than 20 nanometres | No data yet
-etcgroup.org

Kumazawa, et. al. in their study, "Effects of Titanium Ions and Particles on Neutrophil Function and Morphology" concluded that cytotoxicity (danger to the cell) was dependent on the particle size of titanium dioxide. The smaller the particle size, the more toxic it is (see Table 2). This conclusion is relevant to the consumer because of the cosmetics industry's increasing use of micronized pigments in sunscreens and colour cosmetics. Nanoparticles of titanium dioxide are used in sunscreens because they are colourless at that size and still absorb ultraviolet light. Many cosmetic companies are capitalizing on metal oxide nanoparticles. We have seen, however, that if titanium dioxide particles used to act as a sunscreen are small enough, they can penetrate the cells, leading to photocatalysis within the cell, causing DNA damage after exposure to sunlight (Powell, et. al. 1996) The fear is that this could lead to cancer in the skin. Studies with subjects who applied sunscreens with micronized titanium dioxide daily for 2-4 weeks showed that the skin can absorb microfine particles. These particles were seen in the percutaneous layers of the skin under UV light. Coarse or fine particles of titanium dioxide are safe and effective at deflecting and absorbing UV light, protecting the skin, but consumers should avoid using products with micronized mineral pigments, either in sunscreens or colour cosmetics.

Tip! While it is not be possible to identify specific individuals who may be more susceptible to toxic mold, senior citizens, small children, infants, and people with weak immune systems and allergies are considered the most vulnerable to toxic mold-related illness. People with existing respiratory illness and asthma should be particularly careful of lung infections, which can be activated due to prolonged toxic mold exposure.

As with any health issue, relevant studies must be examined closely to reach balanced conclusions about its impact on our health and well-being. Often, risk determinations are made without considering actual hazards and real-life exposures (Warheit, 2004). The Organic Make-up Co. considers fine or coarse particle sized titanium dioxide and other mineral pigments to be safe according to the studies available and information discussed in this article. Despite repeated requests for micronized pigments in our colour cosmetics, we insist on using only coarse or fine particles of mineral pigments, balancing our need to look beautiful with our more pressing need to stay healthy. With the multitude of cosmetics and chemicals available to us, it is in our best interest to become informed as consumers and make pure, natural and simple choices to protect our health and longevity.

Tip! According to the Environmental Protection Agency there are 188 different toxic air pollutants.

Controlling Mold Without Toxic Chemicals

By Debra Lynn Dadd

Mold can grow anywhere there are damp conditions--from a windowsill to a
bathroom, to a whole house. While the health effects of most common molds are minimal, the chemicals we commonly use to remove the unsightly growth can harm our health. Mold cleaners can contain toxic chemicals such as pentachorophenol, which can be harmful through skin absorption or inhalation, and formaldehyde, which can cause cancer as well as irritate eyes, throat, skin, and lungs. Many mold cleaners carry the "DANGER" warning label and state that they should be used only in a well-ventilated area (next time you want to clean mold from your shower, look around for the ventilation...)

Tip! Mild symptoms of toxic mold appear quite similar to the common cold, including red eyes, sore throat, and headache.

Fortunately, there are ways to clean and even prevent mold that are natural and safe
for you and your family.

Mold is a living organism that needs certain conditions to stay alive. A moist, dark, environment with little moving air is perfect. Mold just can't live in an environment that is dry, light, or breezy. The solution to any mold problem of any kind is to introduce heat (to dry the moisture), light, or moving air (such as from a fan).

I used to live in an old house in a forest, next to a creek, in an area that has a lot of rainfall in the winter. One year was particularly cold and rainy and so to conserve
heat, I closed the door on my extra bedroom, which contained books and research
papers, a bed, and out-of-season clothing. By the end of winter, there was so much
mold in that room that it was literally growing on my clothing. My cotton espadrille
shoes and cloth-covered binders were covered with blue fuzz. What to do? Mold was
covering literally everything!

Tip! Reduce or eliminate the use of aerosol sprays or toxic chemicals for cleaning. Use natural products such as vinegar and peroxide, rubbing alcohol or baking soda instead.

In my situation, I opted to use heat. I put a portable space heater in the room and closed the door. After several hours I peeked in and steam was rising. It was like a sauna. After twenty-four hours, however, all was bone dry and I was able to brush visible mold (now a dry powder) from walls, clothing, and other surfaces. The moral of the story: if you live in a damp environment that doesn't get much sun, make sure your heat circulates completely around the house, and even though it may take more energy, it's needed to keep your home dry and safe. Mold can do damage to material possessions and human health, so its better to stay warm and dry.

Tip! A straightforward mold test can guard the health and future of a family.

If you have just a small area of mold, use a hand-held dryer to dry it up in just a few minutes.

You can prevent mold from growing by keeping areas dry. Find the source of
moisture and control it. Mold in an undersink cabinet, for example, may require
fixing leaky pipes. Controlling mold in a bathroom may involve installing a small
space heater to run after a shower to dry out the room, or using a fan for the same
purpose. No moisture--no mold.

Tip! Many toxic air pollutants are known to cause cancer, respiratory or allergy problems, reproductive disorders, birth defects and other serious health issues.

In a closet, hang garments with space between them to allow for air-flow and install a small light, both to dispel darkness and provide a little heat. If you live in a very humid area, a dehumidifier may be necessary.

To remove mold from shower tile or other hard surface, mix borax and water, or vinegar and water, in a spray bottle. Spray it on and the mold wipes right off. Borax inhibits mold growth, so wash down the walls in your bathroom with a borax solution and just leave it on, or sprinkle borax in damp cabinets under the sink. If you need something stronger to remove stubborn mold, use hydrogen peroxide.

Steam cleaners--which clean, sanitize, and deodorize using only hot water--also
work great on mold. You can purchase small hand-held steam cleaners in the
housewares department of discount stores for about $50 or larger units on the
Internet.

Tip! The best means of avoiding the serious repercussions of toxic mold is to have your home or office tested as soon as the above-mentioned symptoms appear. A straightforward mold test can guard the health and future of a family.

Is Your Bed Making You Sick? Do You Spend 1/3 of Your Life Immersed in Toxic Chemicals?

By Suzy Sharpe

Tip! Reduce or eliminate the use of aerosol sprays or toxic chemicals for cleaning. Use natural products such as vinegar and peroxide, rubbing alcohol or baking soda instead.

Do You Spend 1/3 of Your Life Not Only Immersed in Toxic Chemicals and Noxious Gasses, but Inhaling Fecal Matter?

When you get a new mattress or pillow, do you love that "new bed smell?" Don't breathe in too deeply.

That "new" smell consists of gasses being released into the air, and they could be ruining your health. When chemicals reach certain temperatures, they release gasses, this is called "outgassing." Many of these gasses are toxic. This outgassing continues long after the smell has disappeared. You will breathe these gasses for as long as you own that mattress, for as long as your head is on that pillow.

Tip! Mild symptoms of toxic mold appear quite similar to the common cold, including red eyes, sore throat, and headache.

Why are there chemicals in your bed?
Read the label on your mattress. It very probably is made from polyurethane, most mattresses are. This material has thousands of modern uses. It can be formed into the softest foam, or into sturdy pilings. It is found everywhere. However it has a serious drawback. Polyurethane burns like gasoline when set on fire. The Consumers Union reports that a sofa made from polyurethane and set on fire will engulf a living room and fill the house with dark smoke and toxic gasses in just four minutes.

Tip! Many toxic air pollutants are known to cause cancer, respiratory or allergy problems, reproductive disorders, birth defects and other serious health issues.

This problem was "solved" by soaking the polyurethane in fire retardant chemicals.

The good news is: these mattresses no longer burn like kerosene soaked rags. The bad news is: the fire retardant chemicals are causing serious health problems. The release of poisonous gasses by just three of the more common fire-retardant chemicals, arsenic, antimony, and phosphorus have been linked by scientists to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). (See our special report: What Do These Things Have in Common: An Epidemic of Baby Deaths in 1890, an Ambassador's Sudden Illness, Swamp Gas, and Old Mattresses? The Answer Could Save Your Baby's Life!)

What hazardous chemicals are you and your family being exposed to? The manufacturers aren't required to put the fire retardant chemicals on the label. The most commonly used chemicals, and their health hazards are:

  • Boric acid - Inhaling the dust can cause headaches, coughing, dizziness or difficulty breathing. Prolong contact may cause skin sensitization.
  • PBDE's - are prohibited in the European Union after high levels were found in breast milk. California has decided to phase out the use of two of these, penta and octa PBDE by 2008. PBDEs accumulate in the body tissues and cause thyroid hormone disruption, permanent learning and memory impairment, decreased sperm count, fetal malformations, behavioral changes, hearing deficiencies and possibly cancer. U.S. women have levels in their body tissues 50 times more than European women. (For more eye-opening information, click on the link at the end of this report to "Our Stolen Future" Website containing results of a study of PBDEs).
  • Formaldehyde - the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission states in a report on urethane insulation, "Many health complaints, including irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin, headaches and shortness of breath, have been reported to CPSC over the last several years by consumers who have had UFFI in their homes. Less frequently reported symptoms include chest pain, diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, and sleep disturbance. Studies have shown that formaldehyde in liquid solution (and possibly formaldehyde gas) can, through repeated exposure, cause sensitization in certain individuals. When exposed to formaldehyde gas, sensitized individuals may exhibit allergic dermatitis or mild-to-severe asthmatic reactions." This was talking about formaldehyde outgassing from insulation. The same effects would occur from exposure to formaldehyde outgassing while you are sleeping in your bed. CPSC considers formaldehyde to be a potential human carcinogen.
  • Decabromodipheyl Oxide - is a developmental toxicant. Exposing mothers to it during pregnancy can cause the death of or disrupt the development of the fetus. It causes birth defects and low birth weight. Behavioral or psychological problems can appear as the child grows.
  • Melamine - is a reproductive toxicant, which can cause premature menopause, decreases in male and female fertility, onset of puberty, and changes in menstruation, gestation time, and lactation. It is a development toxicant with all of the hazards of Decabromodiphyl Oxide mentioned above. It is a cardiovascular and blood toxicant. This affects the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen, white blood cells to fight disease, abnormal heartbeat, decreased blood flow, and elevated blood pressure.
  • Antimony - The Australian Government Department of Environment and Heritage says of antimony, " Antimony compounds show toxic properties similar to those of arsenic. This depends on how much antimony a person has been exposed to, for how long, and current state of health. Exposure to high levels of antimony can result in a variety of adverse health effects. Breathing high levels for a long time can irritate eyes and lungs and can cause heart and lung problems, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach ulcers. Ingesting large doses of antimony can cause vomiting."When eaten by mold or mildew, antimony releases a poisonous gas called stibine. This gas has caused epidemics of deaths in the past.

Tip! Calvin Klein's Eternity, as well as numerous other perfumes, contain the same neurotoxic solvents that are found in glues and adhesives, as well as the same volatile chemicals that are common in garages and factories. Perfumes also contain known neurotoxins, allergens, irritants and/or hormone disrupters.

These are a few of the chemicals used as fire retardants. Polyols, toluene diisocyante, amines, siloxanes, styrene, limonene, benzene and many others are also used. If you find any chemicals listed on your mattress label, you can search the web for more information. Write the chemical in the search box adding a comma, then write "health hazard."

Tip! A straightforward mold test can guard the health and future of a family.

How to Protect Yourself! You can protect yourself from the effects of chemical outgassing by wrapping your mattress in a gas impervious material, such as polyethylene. This can be bought in thick sheets at your local hardware store, or some websites sell mattress covers.

Many of these gasses are heavier than air. When you wrap your mattress, leave openings on the bottom so the mattress will ventilate away from your face. Whenever possible, use organic, chemical free bedding such as pure organic wool and pesticide free organic cotton.

Creepy crawlies in your bed! Dust mites! Dust mites are related to spiders and ticks but are smaller than the periods at the end of this sentence. They are too small to be seen by the unaided eye. They live by the millions in your bed and feed off your skin flakes and dandruff. Your body provides the more than 50% humidity they need to survive and keeps their habitat toasty warm.

Tip! The best means of avoiding the serious repercussions of toxic mold is to have your home or office tested as soon as the above-mentioned symptoms appear. A straightforward mold test can guard the health and future of a family.

They are also the number one cause of allergies and asthma. But it isn't their tiny bodies causing the sneezing, wheezing, sniffling and coughing. The more than 40,000 of them counted by a scientist per one ounce of dust leave a lot of droppings. This fecal matter causes the reactions in sensitive people. It is estimated 15% of the population and 85% of asthmatics are sensitive to dust mite poo.

Polyurethane foam, feathers and down all are wonderful dust mite hotels. The foam is made of billions of air pockets the dust mites love to call "home." When the foam is compressed they have no problem hanging on, and when it is released (as you roll over) it sucks in more food and moisture for them.

You can't completely eliminate dust mites from your home. You can reduce their numbers by creating an inhospitable environment. If possible, take your bedding out into the sun to dry it out. Dust mites hate light and dryness. This doesn't work for polyurethane though. Wash bedding and stuffed toys in hot water or freeze them overnight. Freezing won't get rid of the fecal matter.

If there is an asthmatic in the house, their bedroom should have neither carpet nor upholstered furniture. Window blinds instead of drapes would cut down on the habitat. Mattresses should be covered with polyethylene or another moisture and gas proof material. Vacuum with a machine with a HEPA filter that will trap dust mites. Empty it after every use. Eliminate stuffed toys, or clean them in hot water (130 F) often, or buy toys stuffed with organic wool. Bedding should be changed weekly or more frequently.

Whenever possible, use pure organic wool as bedding. Wool wicks moisture away and allows it to evaporate. This not only makes it comfortable for the person sleeping, but it lowers the humidity creating an inhospitable environment for dust mites.

Although other materials require added flame retardant by law, pure wool does not.

How Toxic is Your Bathroom?

By Brenda Hoffman

Be warned! Your daily beauty regime could be taking years off of your life. Most (99%) personal care products have not been safety tested. Your health may even be damaged due to the daily mixing of many different types of toxins in and on the body. On average, each of us uses 9 personal care products a day, containing a total of 126 different ingredients. When these chemicals are absorbed into the body, they can be stored in fatty tissue or organs (ie the liver, kidney, reproductive organs and brain). Medical research has proven that fragrances can trigger asthma; the detergents in shampoos can damage eye tissue; and that hair-dye chemicals can cause bladder cancer and lymphoma. If these problems had been linked to pharmaceutical drugs, the products would have been taken off of the market. However, since the cosmetics industry is largely self-governing, products containing potentially harmful substances remain in use and on sale. If you think that it can't be that bad, then you need to consider what goes into some of the most popular toiletries.

Tip! The best means of avoiding the serious repercussions of toxic mold is to have your home or office tested as soon as the above-mentioned symptoms appear. A straightforward mold test can guard the health and future of a family.

Olay Regenerist claims to instantly improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But what they don't tell you is that in order to work, the product needs to be well absorbed, so it uses penetration enhancers which actually drive toxins deeper into your skin. This in turn leads to hormone disruptions, carcinogenic effects and skin irritation.

Clairol Herbal Essences Shampoo For Dry/Damaged Hair claims to provide you with a totally organic experience. But what they don't tell you is that it also contains 4 potentially cancer-causing dyes, as well as synthetic fragrances that are known neurotoxins and skin irritants. This product can also permanently damage eye tissue, cause breast cancer, and chemicals that also cause the damaging chemicals to penetrate more deeply into skin and bloodstream.

Tip! Reduce or eliminate the use of aerosol sprays or toxic chemicals for cleaning. Use natural products such as vinegar and peroxide, rubbing alcohol or baking soda instead.

Johnson's Baby Soft Wash claims to be best for you and your baby. But what it doesn't tell you is that it also contains skin and eye irritants and hormone disrupters. Since children's skin is thinner and more absorbent than adults', it provides a less effective barrier to these chemical toxins. Furthermore, you only get the mere impression of smoothness since there's nothing in this product that actually smooths your skin.

Colgate Total claims to provide you with 12-hour fresh breath and antibacterial protection. But what it doesn't tell you is that it also contains irritating detergents which can cause sore gums and mouth ulcers. It also contains abrasives which can erode tooth enamel. There are also carcinogens, and chemicals that can produce chloroform gas, which is easily absorbed into the skin or inhaled and can cause depression, liver problems and cancer.

Gillette Mach 3 Shaving Gel contains skin irritants, 3 potential carcinogens and 3 central nervous system toxins or pollutants.

Tip! As toxic mold infestation grows and mycotoxins fill the air, symptoms may increase in severity to include asthma, sinus headache, nasal congestion, dizziness, skin rashes, hives, difficulty in swallowing, involuntary facial movements, irritable bowels, excessive fatigue, recurrent sore throat, chronic cough, bleeding lungs, pulmonary hemorrhage, increased risk of tuberculosis, and osteopenia.

Clairol Nice 'N Easy claims to provide natural-looking color with complete grey coverage. But what they don't tell you is that it can cause allergic reactions and has carcinogenic effects. In fact, intensive longer-term use is associated with breast, ovarian and bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple meyeloma and rheumatoid arthritis.

Clearasil 3-in-1 Deep Cleaning Wash has been clinically proven to help fight acne. But what they don't tell you is that the product is capable of removing the skin's natural oils. It also contains 2 potential carcinogens and that it can also consistently lead to skin problems.

Listerine Teeth And Gum Defense claims to kill the germs that cause plaque and bad breath. But what it doesn't tell you is that it is 21.6% alcohol and thatq alcohol dries and changes the pH of the mouth and throat and long-term use of alcohol-containing mouthwashes increases the risk of mouth and throat cancers. Listerine also contains ingredients that are poisonous if swollen, are known carcinogenics, and can alter the basic flora of the mouth and may cause dermatitis.

Toxic Cosmetics Exposed

By Judy Phillips

Tip! As toxic mold infestation grows and mycotoxins fill the air, symptoms may increase in severity to include asthma, sinus headache, nasal congestion, dizziness, skin rashes, hives, difficulty in swallowing, involuntary facial movements, irritable bowels, excessive fatigue, recurrent sore throat, chronic cough, bleeding lungs, pulmonary hemorrhage, increased risk of tuberculosis, and osteopenia.

As a consumer, you must be on the look out for chemicals and toxic ingredients that may be injurious to your skin and your body. You would not even consider eating products that contained chemicals or cancer causing agents, so don't let these toxins cross the threshold and enter your system through your beauty product either!

Insignificant amounts of research are available to provide evidence of the safety or health risks of low-dose repeated exposures to chemical combinations like those in personal care products, but let's get one thing straightthe absence of data should never, never be mistaken for confirmation of safety.

Tip! Many toxic air pollutants are known to cause cancer, respiratory or allergy problems, reproductive disorders, birth defects and other serious health issues.

The more we investigate low dose contact with these products, the more we comprehend that they can cause adverse effects ranging from the subtle and reversible, to effects that are more critical and permanent. On the whole, our research of product safety reveals a cause for concern.

Interestingly enough, 450 ingredients that are used in this country are banned for use in cosmetics in the European Union by the industry. The dictatorial vacuum in the United States gives cosmetic companies enormous leeway in selecting ingredients, while it shifts potentially considerable and unnecessary health risks to the users of the products.

Tip! People with existing respiratory illness and asthma should be particularly careful of lung infections, which can be activated due to prolonged toxic mold exposure.

Cosmetics and personal care products are promoted based on the quality and ingredients of their formulas. Numerous products allege to be filled with expensive vitamins, oils, and perfumes. Others profess to use an all-natural formula. How can you be certain that the products you purchase contain the ingredients they claim to have or that they are safe? Read the label? Guess again! Unless you happen to be a scientist or a chemist, the ingredient list on the majority of cosmetic and personal care products will look like a laundry list of monotonous, tongue twisting names that make no sense at all. If you want to educate yourself, there are several books that will really bring you up to speed on what is in your personal care products. One would be, Dangerous Beauty, by Mark Fearer; and the other is called, Drop Dead Gorgeous, by Kim Erickson. Additionally, there are many groups that are pushing for safe products such as WomenandEnvironment.org.

Tip! Reduce or eliminate the use of aerosol sprays or toxic chemicals for cleaning. Use natural products such as vinegar and peroxide, rubbing alcohol or baking soda instead.

Why should you have reservations about the safety of ingredients in body care products that you spread over your body and hair? There are many reasons, yet here is the most compelling one:

Hongran Fan and her coworkers at the Veteran Affairs Palo Alto (Calif.) Health Care System and Stanford University School of Medicine planned to demonstrate the effectiveness of intramuscular gene injections by comparing them with simply dripping a DNA vaccine solution onto the skin of mice. Well, they discovered that it was possible to distribute the vaccine through the hair follicles on unbroken skin.

So, if you can absorb an effectual prescribed amount of a vaccine simply by having it come in contact with your skin, how much of the toxic ingredients that are in your personal care products are you absorbing through your skin? Think about ityou are literally bombarding your tissues, your organs and your brain with man-made chemicals and their processing residues!

Tip! The National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHEA) has identified 884 toxic or potentially cancer causing ingredients commonly found in commonly used personal care products.

Toxic Mold Symptoms

By Richard Romando

Tip! Reduce or eliminate the use of aerosol sprays or toxic chemicals for cleaning. Use natural products such as vinegar and peroxide, rubbing alcohol or baking soda instead.

Toxic mold symptoms are often overlooked or misdiagnosed by doctors owing to their likeness to flu and other illnesses. Recent years have witnessed a rise in the cases of toxic mold-related illnesses across the U.S. Toxic mold, which is often caused by leaky pipes or badly sealed windows, can swarm a house, office, or an apartment within weeks. It is odorless and breeds in poorly lit and damp conditions, making it hard to detect without professional help. Unless the source of toxic mold is removed, symptoms can get progressively worse and eventually lead to grave illnesses.

Tip! Many toxic air pollutants are known to cause cancer, respiratory or allergy problems, reproductive disorders, birth defects and other serious health issues.

Mild symptoms of toxic mold appear quite similar to the common cold, including red eyes, sore throat, and headache. As toxic mold infestation grows and mycotoxins fill the air, the symptoms may increase in severity to include asthma, sinus headache, nasal congestion, dizziness, skin rashes, hives, difficulty in swallowing, involuntary facial movements, irritable bowels, excessive fatigue, recurrent sore throat, chronic cough, bleeding lungs, pulmonary hemorrhage, increased risk of tuberculosis, and osteopenia. Continued exposure to toxic mold may result in life-threatening illness like pulmonary hemorrhages, seizures, and tuberculosis.

Your Health... Indoor Air Can Be Toxic

By Lisa Andrews

Tip! As toxic mold infestation grows and mycotoxins fill the air, symptoms may increase in severity to include asthma, sinus headache, nasal congestion, dizziness, skin rashes, hives, difficulty in swallowing, involuntary facial movements, irritable bowels, excessive fatigue, recurrent sore throat, chronic cough, bleeding lungs, pulmonary hemorrhage, increased risk of tuberculosis, and osteopenia.

Your home; your health? Did you know that the air inside an average home can have 2-5 times more pollution in it than what is found outdoors. Is that good for you? Of course not!

Because we spend most of our time indoors we are exposed to all sorts of pollutants. Just for starters; think of all the different sprays, cleaners, air fresheners and many other products we use in our homes everyday.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency there are 188 different toxic air pollutants. Many are known to cause cancer, respiratory or allergy problems, reproductive disorders, birth defects and other serious health issues. Some such as carbon monoxide can even be fatal.

The EPA states that the cause of indoor air pollution stems from combustion pollutants such as gas, oil, coal, wood, tobacco products, building materials, furnishings, insulation that contains asbestos, cleaning or personal use products, damp carpet and lead-based paint. The air fresheners we use release such toxins, also. Do you use or have any of these items in your home? Of course, we all do!

Other pollutants include viruses and bacteria that are spread by people and animals. Cat and dog or other pets spread bacteria through their saliva and dander. Of course, the pollen in the air causes allergies which come from plants, indoors and out.

The dried urine from mice, rats or roaches produce an allergen that permeates the air and causes respiratory and other problems. Dust mites, which produce allergens, live in warm moist places such as mattresses, bed sheets, cloth furniture, curtains and carpets. And, as you know, mold and mildew
breed in damp areas like bathrooms, kitchens and water damaged materials.

Many diseases and other health issues are brought on by these indoor air pollutants. Colds, flu, coughing, sneezing, itchy watery eyes, yes, respiratory problems, such as asthma, nasal congestion, sinus infections, chicken pox, measles, and digestive problems can all be the result of pollutants.

So, what can you do to protect yourself and your family?

Let's look at some things you can do to prevent or even rid your home of those awful indoor air pollutants:

  • Don't allow any smoking in your home. Smokers should go outside to smoke and away from children.

  • To effectively reduce dust mites wash bed sheets in the hottest water possible on a weekly basis. Vacuum mattresses, carpets and curtains regularly with a bagless (empty each time) vacuum cleaner.

  • Dust furniture with a slightly damp cloth (no sprays). Do this weekly, or more often, if needed. Air purifiers help eliminate dust.

Tip! The National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHEA) has identified 884 toxic or potentially cancer causing ingredients commonly found in commonly used personal care products.

  • Fix any leaky faucets or pipes that will cause the growth of mold and mildew. Once it gets behind walls it takes professionals to clean it correctly.

  • Install a whole house air purifier that can rid your home of 99% of the allergens.

  • Improve ventilation in your home by opening windows to allow fresh outdoor air to come inside. Make sure exhaust fans for the bathrooms and over the stove are working properly.

  • Be sure that dryers vent outside instead of inside a garage or laundry room.

  • Reduce or eliminate the use of aerosol sprays or toxic chemicals for cleaning. Use natural products such as vinegar and peroxide, rubbing alcohol or baking soda instead.
